First performed in Canterbury Cathedral by the King's School Orchestra & Choir under Paul Neville in April 1981.

The Canterbury Psalms was written whilst Paul Patterson was South East Arts "composer-in-residence" based at the King's School Canterbury. It was composed for the school in 1980 and is dedicated to Alan Ridout. The work was first performed in Canterbury Cathedral in March, 1981, with the participation of the Deal and Walmer Handelian Society. 

It is in three movements, and uses a text taken from psalms 97, 121 and 148. The music is in festive mood, the first movement having a predominantly rhythmic emphasis, with driving off-beat motifs. A tranquil second movement is followed by a joyous finale in which the brass and percussion are prominent.
