The three quintets by Paul Patterson (b1947) chart a fascinating stylistic course, from the lean astringency of the 1967 Wind Quintet (the product of a precocious 20-year old student at the Royal Academy of Music), via the Arnoldesque, face-pulling antics of the Comedy for five winds from 1972, to the crowd-pleasing Westerly Winds ( a 1998 transcription of his folksong-based Four Rustic Sketches for orchestra). Patterson writes with total confidence for the medium, and the performances are simply breath-taking in their co-ordination and tonal lustre

Hell’s Angels (1998) is Patterson’s most significant return to his early style of composition, setting a text by Ben Dunwell interleaved with excerpts from Milton’s Paradise Lost and the Old Testament. The scoring is for choir, amplified string quartet and four percussionists and results in new sonorities revealing Patterson’s imagination at full stretch.
The earlier Mass of the Sea (1983) sets a composite text, assembled this time by Tim Rose-Price, combining portions of the Latin Mass with extracts from Genesis and Revelations alongside new material by the librettist. The avant-garde techniques are still present and a plainchant (Ave maris stella) acts as a thematic scarlet thread. Though the work follows the general contours of innumerable previous settings of the Latin Mass, at every turn Patterson subverts the genre.

Royal Eurostar

This 'Royal Eurostar' recording is a celebration in music of one of the most important engineering feats of the twentieth century - the building of the Channel Tunnel, and the creation of probably the finest railway station ever built: Waterloo International. The Paul Patterson works were all composed for the State Opening of the tunnel on 6 May 1994 and are intended to exploit the extraordinary acoustic inside the new Waterloo station (including the constant 'pedal D' which comes from the train engines!).
