The form of the work is six short movements inspired by Paul's summer holiday in 1986 at Quiberville, a small seaside town near Dieppe. The work opens with a brisk movement entitled 'Aperitif' followed by 'Son et Lumiere' which displays the sonorous nature of the instruments. As the name suggests, 'Bustle on the Boulevard' is a quick movement, making use of the pairing of instruments. 'Les amours de Black' – a waltz with a difference – illustrates the antics of the local dog, Black. The penultimate movement, 'Lazy Weekend' , is a slow one, making great use of the "wow-wow" mute. To end, Paul has written a very fast movement aptly entitled 'Monsieur Non-Stop'. Although the work has a humorous side, it also has a serious one, ably illustrating the many sides of the trombone and making wide use of the large number of mutes to produce different tone-colours and techniques. |
