The entertainment Little Red Riding Hood has been arguably Patterson's greatest popular success since its unveiling by the London Philharmonic in 1992, and 2 years later it would lead to the present Songbook for narrator, treble voices and piano accompaniment, very much a satellite work as it employs much of the earlier piece's thematic material. But instead of reprising the narrative approach of Little Red Riding Hood, the Songbook focuses upon drawing the protagonists' characteristics more fully, with the help of Brendan Beales'
irreverent text. Thus, the first three movements portray Red Riding Hood herself, the Wolf and Grandma respectively, drawing attention to the heroine's deviousness, the villain's gluttony and Grandma's fondness for alcoholic beverages. The remaining two movements are a Requiem in the aftermath of Grandma's grisly fate at the jaws of the Wolf, and a raunchy celebration for Little Red Riding Hood as she triumphs over the Wolf in no uncertain fashion!
